Punjab is simply translated to the land of five rivers. Punj means five and ab means water. However, there is a little more detail to this that gets overlooked but is important to know. Panjab comes from the Persian language and was originally spelled with an ‘a’. However, under British influence the name was changed to Punjab. As a result, five rivers has become synonymous with Panjab, India. But that is not what the five rivers are all about. The five rivers run deeper than Panjab, India today. They run through what Panjab is for many of us, a place that includes Pakistan, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. A place where Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs come together as Panjabis. It encompasses the true Panjab before it was torn apart in 1947. Even though geographically it is shown as separated, the Beas, Satluj, Ravi, Chenab, and Jhelum remind us of what once was and how the rivers still keep all Panjabis connected. River5 is how we have depicted what Panjab means to us. It is our roots, our foundation, where battles were fought for us to be where we are today.
