Music is a huge part of our history. From our Guru Granth Sahib written to musical forms, music is so rooted in our foundation. Today when we think of music, we think of panjabi or bhangra music. Bhangra was first a traditional form of dance that originated from the Panjab region of India and Pakistan. It was initially used as a celebratory folk dance which heralded the coming of spring, or Vaisakhi. Following the partition of India, different regions of the country began to mix and interact, sharing their different forms of bhangra. The end result was a hybrid that incorporated many different styles. Bhangra music started through dhol and tumbi which now is infused into new age music. This infusion has helped it reach people outside of the Panjabi community. Our music has broken barriers and is the core of every celebration not only in our community but in other communities as well. Bhangra is now found in mainstream music and has been used by many artists. Panjabi artists continue to use music to express social and cultural issues to everything in between. This dance and music of our past truly signifies the traditions we still follow and the beats that continue to show how panjabi culture continues to flourish.
